The traditional method to authenticate public documents to be used abroad is called\u00a0<strong>legalisation<\/strong>\u00a0and consists of a\u00a0<strong>chain of authentications<\/strong>\u00a0involving officials from the issuing country and the embassy or consulate of the country where the target document needs to be used. Due to the number of authorities involved, the legalisation process is often bureaucratic, slow and expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Many countries in the world has joined a treaty which greatly simplifies the authentication of public documents to be used abroad: the\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Official website of the Hague Convention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hcch.net\/index_en.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hague Convention of 5 October 1961<\/a>\u00a0Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents<\/strong>, best known as the\u00a0<strong>Apostille Convention<\/strong>.
