What concretely is an Apostille?

Blog

The apostille itself is a stamp or printed form consisting of 10 numbered standard fields.

On the top is the text APOSTILLE, including the short version of the French title of the Convention Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961.

In the numbered fields the following information is added:

  1. Country … [country name]

This public document

  1. has been signed by … [name]

  2. acting in the capacity of … [function]

  3. bears the seal/stamp of … [authority]

certified

  1. at … [location]

  2. the … [date]

  3. by … [name]

  4. No … [apostille registration number]

  5. Seal/stamp … [of the authority issuing the apostille]

  6. Signature … [signature of authority issuing the apostille]

The apostille can be directly stamped on the document itself, or attached to the document as an affixed slip of paper.

EFFECTS OF AN APOSTILLE

The only effect of an Apostille is to certify the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted, and where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp which the document bears. The Apostille does not certify the content of the document itself.
